Holy Basil

Holy Basil is an aromatic plant that is native to India and cultivated widely throughout the tropics of Southeast Asia. The scientific name of Holy basil is Ocimum tenuiflorum, but it is also known as Ocimum Sanctum, Tulasi or Tulsi. Holy Basil belongs to the order of Lamiales, family of Lamiaceae and the gensus of which is Ocimum. Holy Basil grows as a small shrub about 1-2 feet tall. It is primarily known for its small, green or purple leaves which emit a strong, savory scent.

Holy Basil has been used in Ayurveda for thousands of years due to its unique yet diverse health properties. It is known for cleansing and balancing the various processes of the body and is very effective in relieving stressful situations of the mind. Known for its strong aroma and sour taste; it is regarded in Ayurveda as the elixir of life and is believed to promote longevity.
