The scientific name of the traditional Ayurvedic herb Shatavari is Asparagus Racemosus, while it is commonly referred to as Satavar, Shatamull or Shatawari. As a species of Asparagus, it grows abundantly throughout the Himalayas, Nepal, India, and Sri Lanka. The name Shatavari roughly means "curer of hundred". Shatavari was first described botanically in 1799. The demand of this particular herb is on the rise constantly due to its plethora of uses. This has resulted in excess harvesting, causing the decline of its native growing habitat. Shatavari grows between 3 and 6 feet tall, and high-altitude, rocky terrain. It has small evergreen branches that grow out in a uniform fashion and are green in color. Tiny white flowers emerge in late Spring, while the plant bears dark, round berries in the Fall.
Asparagus Racemosus is recommended highly in Ayurvedic texts for numerous health conditions. Shatavari has been used widely for digestive system support and as a nerve tonic. In Indian Ayurveda, dried and processed roots of Shatavari are used to support a wide variety female health issues.
